Overview & History
The David Brown 780 (DB 780) tractor was built from 1967 to 1971 in Meltham Mills, Huddersfield, England. It was basically a DB 770 tractor with a DB 880 engine and was on the same level as the Ford 3000 and 5000. Its roots go back to 1936 when David Brown & Sons Ltd gear company partnered with Harry Ferguson to build tractors.
This tractor was introduced as a range filler model to meet the requests of its dealers. In the English market, it was considered to be a mid-sized tractor, but in the US it was a compact tractor. During its four-year production, a total of 8,986 units were built. It was last sold for US$ 4,000 in 1971.
The DB 780 featured a 2.7-litre, 3-cylinder David Brown diesel engine that can do 46 hp at 2200 RPM and was rated for 38.9 drawbar hp and 42.9 PTO. Its engine had liquid cooling, bore/stroke measuring 100 by 114 millimetres, 17:1 compression rating, 6.2-litre oil capacity, 9.5-litre coolant capacity, and 36-litre fuel capacity.
As for mechanical features, this tractor came in a two-wheel-drive chassis and had a rear lift capacity rating of 725 kilogrammes. It was equipped with a live PTO that can switch between 540 and 1000 RPM, manual steering, mechanical drum brakes, and a dry disc clutch.
The 780 was available with one of two transmissions: the first was a sliding gear with 12 forward and four reverse. It was composed of a three-speed main box, a two-speed range box, and a splitter that had a low and a normal position. This splitter could be shifted on the fly. Meanwhile, the other transmission system featured six forward and two reverse gears.
The hydraulics system can handle pressure amounting to 2,000 psi and gave 28 litres per minute of pump flow. As for electricals, this tractor featured a negative electrical ground.
The DB 780 can fit size 6.00-16 front tyres and either 12.4- or 11-28-sized rear tyres. It weighed 1,573 kilogrammes, had a 192-centimetre wheelbase, and 29-centimetre ground clearance. It was 283 centimetres long, 162 centimetres wide, and 209 centimetres high.
With features considered to be well ahead of its time, the David Brown 780 remains to be a well-equipped tractor.
