Overview & History
Produced from 1961 to 1971, the David Brown 880 tractor had three major versions: the 880 Implematic or 880C/D, the 880 E/F, and the 880 Selectamatic or 880A/B. There was also a narrow model built, but it was for the export market, making this variant quite rare. All iterations of the DB 880 were built in Meltham Mills, Huddersfield, England.
The 880 Implematic was introduced in September 1961 and ran concurrently with the DB 850, because there were farmers who wanted a compact-sized tractor but with more power. It was an ideal solution for the one-tractor farm. This model was very similar to the 850 except for its eight-stud wheels and a higher clearance for the front axle, which made the component less prone to wear.
The Implematic featured a 2.7-litre, four-cylinder David Brown diesel engine that was liquid-cooled, had 92-by-102-millimetre bore and stroke, 1800 rated RPM, 6.2-litre oil capacity, and 33.1-litre fuel capacity. This version was rated for 35 hp drawbar and 40 hp at PTO. It came in two-wheel-drive chassis, had an open operator station, 1,200-kilogramme rear lift capacity, and a live PTO that can switch between 540 and 1000 RPM.
This version and the next one were fitted with two transmission options: the first had six forward and two reverse gears, with the highest gear being able to run at 24.8 kilometres per hour; while the second had 12 forward and four reverse gears. As for electricals, it was equipped with a negative ground electrical system.
The Implematic version used 6.00-16 sized front tyres and 13.6-28 sized rear tyres and weighed 1,957 kilogrammes. It was 292 centimetres long, 162 centimetres wide, and 133 centimetres high.
In September 1964, the 2.5-litre, three-cylinder diesel engine replaced the four-cylinder, and thus the David Brown 880E/F was born. It had a cross-flow cylinder head, a 97-millimetre bore, 114-millimetre stroke, and an unusually mounted vertical injection pump. The engine had a 17:1 compression rating, a 2200 rated RPM, and 11.4-litre coolant capacity. It was also fitted with a high-lift camshaft that improved the tractor’s performance.
The 880E/F can consume 10 litres of fuel per hour, meaning the tractor can work for around three hours before it needs refueling. Because of the engine change, its battery was changed from two 6-volts to one 12-volt and was moved to the front of the radiator. The oil bath air cleaner was also moved close to it. A three-way hydraulic valve was fitted as well.
Despite only being in production for one year, there were 6,342 880E/F units built. It was last sold for US$ 4,600 in 1965.
The David Brown 880 Selectamatic (880A/B) was introduced in 1965 and a total of 33,378 units were built before it was discontinued in 1971. In this version, the paint scheme and hydraulic system were changed. The engine was replaced with a 2.7-litre, 3-cylinder diesel engine, which had a bigger bore measuring 100 millimetres, and higher fuel consumption of 10.5 litres per hour. It also had more power with 46 hp gross, rated 35.56 hp drawbar, and 43.2 hp at PTO. It also featured bigger capacity with 8.5 litres for coolant and 51.9 litres for fuel.
Unlike the first two versions, the Selectamatic was available in both two-wheel- and four-wheel-drive. It had manual steering, differential mechanical expanding shoe brakes, dry disc clutch, an optional cab, and bigger rear lift capacity rating of 1,134 kilogrammes.
The 880A/B required bigger rear tyres size 14.9-28, or 12.4-32 for the UK models. It had a wheelbase of 202 centimetres and front axle clearance of 50 centimetres. It was also bigger than the previous versions: it was 309 centimetres long and 218 centimetres high up to the exhaust (233 centimetres when cab is included) and weighed 2,027 kilogrammes.
Despite its age, the David Brown 880 remains to be a durable tractor that is still used by many farmers. The 4-cylinder version is known for its quiet and smooth ride while the 3-cylinder is regarded for its slogging ability, fuel efficiency, and ease of starting.
