Overview & History
The David Brown 990 was a 50-hp class utility tractor built in Meltham Mills, Huddersfield, England. It was originally sold with the Implematic designation (or DB 990A) in 1961, but it was later upgraded to a Selectamatic (or DB 990B) in 1965, before getting discontinued in 1980.
The 990 Implematic featured the classic yellow-and-red paint scheme. It was equipped with a 52-hp, three-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that can give 43 hp drawbar and 48 hp PTO, had 92-by-114-millimetre bore/stroke, and 17:1 compression rate. This engine also operated on 700 to 2200 RPM and had liquid cooling, an oil bath cleaner, 52-litre fuel capacity, 7.4-litre oil capacity, and 13.6-litre coolant capacity.
This version had either of two transmissions: a six-speed gear or a 12-speed partially synchronised transmission. The six-speed had three gears (1-3) each in low and high ranges plus reverse, and the third gear in the high range can run up to 19.1 kilometres per hour.
Meanwhile, the 12-speed had three gears in each of the four ranges, plus reverse, and was capable of synchronised up-shifting between gears 1 to 3 and synchronised down-shifting from 3 to 2. Both transmissions had a dry disc clutch. This tractor came with either transmission or live PTO, both of which can run at 540 or 1,000 RPM.
The Implematic came in a two-wheel drive. It had a mechanical rear differential lock, manual or hydrostatic power steering, differential mechanical expanding shoe brakes, and an open operator station. Its hydraulics system was an open centre that can handle 2,000 psi and give a total flow of 28 litres per minute. This tractor’s charging system was a generator and used two six-volt batteries.
Meanwhile, the Selectamatic was divided into two models–the early model was manufactured from 1965 through 1970, while the later model was from 1971 until 1980. A total of 67,000 units were produced. Both models featured a sturdy design, a 3.2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine, and an optional four-wheel drive.
Aside from a higher displacement compared to the Implematic, the early Selectamatic’s engine had a 55-hp engine output and 52.9 hp at the PTO. It had a more square bore/stroke, which measured 100 and 102 millimetres respectively. It also had a 140 lb-ft torque at 1400 RPM and featured a 12-volt electric starter, 7.5-litre oil capacity, and a 14-litre coolant capacity.
The Selectamatic used a position and draft control for its tractor hitch, which had a rear lift rating of 907 kilogrammes. While it had the same transmission options as the Implematic, this model’s sixth gear can run faster up to 22.7 kilometres per hour.
The later Selectamatic model was more powerful than its previous version, giving out 58 hp gross and 45.2 hp drawbar, even though its engine specs were the same. This model was also available only with 12-speed partially synchronised transmission.
A model of reliability, the David Brown 990 tractor was a great little powerhouse. The only major thing to look into when thinking about getting one is the hydraulics system, especially if the tractor had a lot of hours in it, as any repairs tend to be expensive.
