Overview & History
Built from 1994 through 1996 in Racine, Wisconsin in the USA, the Case IH 7240 tractor was part of the Magnum 7200 series. It replaced the 7140 model and preceded the 8940. In its final production year, it was sold for US$ 94,500.
The 7240 was powered by an 8.3-litre, six-cylinder CDC diesel engine, which had a 16.5:1 compression ratio, 2200 rated RPM, and 12 starter volts. The engine also had a 114-millimetre bore and 135-millimetre stroke. Its other features were inline liquid cooling, mechanical injection fuel system, dual paper elements air cleaner, and an optional block heater. This engine’s oil capacity was 21 litres, coolant capacity was 29 litres, and the fuel capacity was 360 litres.
This tractor had an III-type rear hitch with electronic lower-link draft sensing control. Its rear lift capacity was 5,787 kilogrammes, but a 6,781-kilogramme capacity was available as an option.
The 7240 was powerful, with a PTO rating of 195 hp and a drawbar rating of 167 hp. It had an independent rear PTO which can run at 1000 RPM as well as an electro-hydraulic wet disc clutch. Its transmission was an 18-speed full power shift, but a creeper range can be added to this system.
This model had a closed centre pressure-flow compensated hydraulics system with a 172-litre capacity. With two to four valves, it generated a pump flow of 95 litres per minute at a pressure of 2,300 psi.
As for electricals, this tractor required negative ground. It had an alternator charging system that powered at 110 amps or 12 volts. It also had two 12-volt, 950-CCA batteries.
The 7240 tractor was available in 2WD and 4WD. Its other features were an electrical rear differential lock, power steering, differential hydraulic wet disc brakes, and air-conditioned cab as a standard.
This model used front tyres size 14L-16.1 and rear tyres size 20.8R-42. It weighed 8,096 kilogrammes and had a 300-centimetre wheelbase. The 2WD variant had a 57-centimetre front axle clearance, 101-by-2,895-millimetre rear axle, and 152-to-223-centimetre front tread. Meanwhile, the 4WD’s front axle clearance measured 44 centimetres, its rear axle was 101 by 3,048 millimetres, and its front tread ranged from 152 to 241 centimetres.
The Case IH 7240 tractor is very dependable and will last for many hours as long as it’s well maintained. One issue that operators may encounter would have to do with the transmission control valve, which the maker had issued a service bulletin on.
