Overview & History
The Ford 5000 is a blue-and-white, mid-range tractor that was made in Highland Park, Michigan in the USA for eight years from 1968. It is available in two variants: the 5100, a general-purpose tractor, and the 5200, a row-crop tractor. Both variants were tailored specifically for growing and cultivating crops that were planted in rows.
As more farmers looked for mid-sized tractors, the Ford 5000 rose in popularity, especially in Europe. It was in the top ten best-selling tractors sold in Great Britain until 2005 and was the third best-selling tractor in the history of Ireland. It was eventually discontinued in 1976 and replaced by the Ford 6600, but this model is known to be one of the company’s best-selling tractors worldwide.
The Ford 5000 is equipped with a 4.2-litre, four-cylinder Ford engine that is available in either diesel or gas. Its engine has liquid cooling and an oil-bath air cleaner. Its bore/stroke measures at 112 x 107 mm while the compression ratio is at 7.75:1. It has a power rating of 2100 RPM and a fuel capacity of 75.7 litres.
This tractor has an independent rear PTO that runs at either 540 @ 1900 engine RPM or 1000 @ 2060 engine RPM. The 5100 variant has power assist steering while the 5200 has hydrostatic power steering. Both variants come in a 4×2 two-wheel drive and have a differential mechanical wet disc clutch and an open operator station.
The Ford 5000 was fitted with an open-centre hydraulics system that has a 32.9-litre capacity. It gives off 2500 psi pressure and a pump flow of 22.7 lpm. Its standard front tyres are sized 6.00-16 or 7.50-16, while its standard rear tyres are sized 12.4-38, 13.6-38, 15.5-38, 16.9-30, or 18.4-26. Its standard rear tread ranges from 142 to 203 cm, but when equipped with power-adjust rear wheels, its rear tread increases to a range of 142 to 228 cm.
As for dimensions, the 5100 variant is 359 cm long and 154 cm high from the ground to the hood and has a 222-cm wheelbase. Meanwhile, the 5200 variant is 378 cm long and 172 cm high from the ground to the hood and has a wheelbase that measures at 243 cm. Both variants weigh 2,660 kg, are 173 cm wide, and their steering wheel heights go up to 161 cm. Both of them also have 36-cm ground clearance.
Lastly, the Ford 5000 requires a negative electrical ground and has a 22-amp generator for its charging system.
Whether as a top pick for daily use or as a standby in case the other tractor breaks down, the Ford 5000 is a trusted machine. The abundance of this model means it is easy to find parts for. It is also simple to repair and very reliable. As a fuel-efficient tractor, especially if it has a diesel engine, it can be used for pretty much anything, preferably for bigger tasks to maximise its power.
