Overview & History
Part of the 200 series, the Massey Ferguson 265 (MF 265) was a row-crop tractor that had a long production run from 1975 to 1983. It was bigger than its predecessor, the MF 165, but shared the same design principles. Its last known price was US$ 22,500 back in 1983.
While the 165 came with four engine options, the 265 only had one: a 3.9-litre, four-cylinder Perkins diesel engine, which churned out 50 hp at the drawbar and 60 hp PTO. This engine had liquid cooling, 98-by-127 millimetre bore/stroke, dual dry elements air cleaner, 16:1 compression, and 2000 rated RPM.
The Perkins engine also had a 7.6-litre engine oil capacity, 10.4-litre coolant capacity, and 70-litre fuel capacity. Because the tractor can use up to 14.5 litres of fuel per hour, the 265 can work for roughly 5 hours before it needs to be refuelled.
The MF 265 had a two-wheel-drive chassis, mechanical rear differential lock, power steering, and differential mechanical dry disc brakes. Although its standard was an open operator station, two-post ROPS and cab were offered as options. Its three-point hitch had a rear lift rating of 1,859 kilogrammes, and its rear PTO was either live or independent and ran at 540 RPM.
This tractor had two transmission options: the first was a gear type, which had eight forward and two reverse gears. This transmission had four speeds, plus reverse, with high and low ranges. The eighth gear can run up to 30.7 kilometres per hour.
Meanwhile, the Multi-Power transmission was a partial power shift type and had 12 forward and four reverse gears. This transmission had three speeds in each of the two ranges plus a two-speed power shift. The 12th gear ran up to 30.6 kilometres per hour.
The 265 had a 30.3-litre hydraulic system that had zero to two valves, can handle 2,300 psi pressure, and had a total flow of 73.8 litres per minute. As for electricals, it had an alternator charging system that charged at 37 amps and one 12-volt, 95 amp-hour battery.
Its front and rear tyres can fit several sizes depending on the model (row-crop or low-profile). It weighed 2,896 kilogrammes and had a 208-centimetre wheelbase and a 3.7-metre turn radius. The row-crop model was 170 centimetres high up to the hood and had 46-centimetre ground clearance, 121- to 182-centimetre front tread, and 142- to 228-centimetre rear tread.
The low-profile model, on the other hand, was 157 centimetres high up to the hood and had a ground clearance of 37 centimetres, front tread from 132 to 193 centimetres, and rear tread from 139 to 220 centimetres.
With its foolproof design, a great deal of power, and easy repairs (if needed), the Massey Ferguson 265 remains to be a great choice for farmers.
