Overview & History
Built from 1972 until 1976, the Massey Ferguson 168 was part of the 100 series. It was a mid-range offering in the manufacturer’s Super-Spec range of tractors, which added to the original line-up. It was marketed as an improvement from the already successful 165, and it incorporated several upgrades in power, performance, and convenience.
The Massey Ferguson 168 was fitted with a 3.9-litre, four-cylinder Perkins diesel engine. Perkins, who built the tractor’s engine, increased the stroke length from 114 mm in the 165 to 122 mm. This resulted in an output of 69 hp (compared to 165’s 58.3 hp) at 2000 rated RPM. The engine also featured 16:1 compression, 200 lb-ft torque at 1250 RPM, 7.9-litre oil capacity, 13.6-litre coolant capacity, and liquid cooling.
This tractor was available in 2WD and 4WD chassis. It had wet disc brakes and an open operator station as a standard, though a cab was also offered as an option. It also featured a Float-O-Matic suspension seat, which was more comfortable than that of the 165.
The 168 had one of two transmission systems: an eight-speed, which had eight forward and two reverse gears, and a 12-speed Multi-Power, which had 12 forward and four reverse gears. Both transmissions had an oil capacity amounting to 29.6 litres.
With a basic eight-speed transmission, this tractor had a live rear PTO, but with a Multi-Power, it was equipped with an independent type instead. Both can run 59 hp at 540 RPM. The 168 can lift objects weighing 1,814 kilogrammes in its rear and its hydraulic system had a capacity of 29.5 litres.
A six-inch spacer was added between the gearbox and the back axle, which gave the 168 several advantages: first, its centre of gravity was moved forward, which improved its hydraulic lift capacity to 1,814 kilogrammes.
Second, it created a wider doorway, longer footplates, and extra space between the seat and the steering wheel, causing noticeable convenience for the operator. Lastly, the added space can fit a creeper box, a transfer box for converting the tractor to 4WD, or even a forward/reverse shuttle.
The 168 had standard front tyres sized 7.5×16 and rear tyres sized 13.6 or 12×36, a wheelbase of 222 centimetres, and ground clearance of 33 centimetres. It was 350 centimetres long, 182 centimetres wide, and 168 centimetres high, and it weighed 2,207 kilogrammes.
The Massey Ferguson 168 is a great tractor that is raved about by both collectors and farmers. Some might find the usual fuel leaks particularly in the lift pump, at the top of the fuel filters, in the fuel tank cap, and in the injector pump, but these are easy to fix.
