Overview & History
The Massey Ferguson 65 (MF65) is a moderately popular row-crop tractor that entered production in 1957 in Detroit, Michigan in the USA and then in 1958 in Coventry, England.
Before the merge with Massey Harris in 1953, Harry Ferguson was already designing a larger tractor to complement the iconic TE20. Labeled the “LTX”, short for “large tractor experimental”, the design looked like the TE20 but bigger in size and equipped with a 60hp engine. However, it was axed shortly after the buyout.
Thanks to the MF35, the company had captured the market for small tractors. But as farmers increased their spending power due to healthy incomes, they started to look for tractors with more horsepower. Massey Ferguson responded to this demand with the MF65.
When the Massey Ferguson 65 was launched, it came with one of four engines as a standard, depending on the factory that produced it. The US-built tractors were equipped with a 2.9-litre Continental engine that is fueled with either petrol or LP gas. Meanwhile, the ones manufactured in the UK have either a Perkins diesel engine with a displacement of either 3.1 or 3.3 litres. All four engines have four cylinders and liquid cooling.
The Continental’s bore/stroke measure at 91 x 111 mm while the Perkins are at 89 x 127 mm for the 3.1-litre engine and 91 x 127 mm for the 3.3-litre engine.
The Massey Ferguson 65 is available in 4×2 two-wheel drive. It has either manual or power steering, differential mechanical internal expanding disc brakes, and an open operator station.
The tractor was fitted with one of three transmission systems: a six-speed with six forward gears and one reverse; a dual range six-speed gear with six forward and two reverse gears and a dry disc clutch; and, a multi-power two-range power shift with 12 forward and four reverse gears and a dry disc clutch.
As for dimensions, the MF65’s tyres can fit sizes 5.50-16, 6.00-16, and 7.50-16 at the front, and 11-38, 12-28, 12-38, and 13-28 at the rear. Its wheelbase measures at 213 cm and has a ground clearance of either 36 cm or 51 cm. It is 337 cm long, 182 cm wide, and is either 144 cm or 159 cm high depending on its ground clearance. Its front tread ranges from 121 to 203 cm while the rear tread ranges from 132 to 223 cm.
The Massey Ferguson 65 managed to become popular among tractor operators despite coming late to the party when the Fordson Major and the Nuffield were already meeting demands for a more powerful tractor. It was eventually discontinued in 1964 and replaced by the MF165. Because a relatively small number of units were produced, the MF65 has become a collectible for enthusiasts, though many are still using it on a daily basis.
