Overview & History
The Ford 6600 was built from 1975 through 1984, succeeding the 5000 and preceding the 6610. It was available in utility and row-crop variants until 1977 when the latter was renamed the Ford 6700. In 1981, it was sold for US$ 11,500.
This tractor was originally available with a 4.2-litre, four-cylinder engine that is either in diesel or gasoline. However, the latter was dropped in 1979. Both engines are liquid-cooled and have 112- by 107-mm bore/stroke and 2100 rated RPM. The diesel variant has an oil-bath air cleaner, a 16.3:1 compression ratio (gasoline has 7.75:1), 200 lb-ft torque, and 1400 torque RPM.
In 1981 and for this year only, the Ford 6600 came with the larger Blue Power Special engine, which was available in diesel, had four cylinders, liquid cooling, and 4.4-litre displacement. Its bore/stroke measured at 112 by 112 mm and had a rated RPM of 2100. All engine variants give 72.5 net horsepower and have fuel capacity ranging from 76 to 125 litres, depending on the engine.
The 6600’s claimed PTO horsepower is at 70 and drawbar is at 58 hp. Its two transmission options are an eight-speed gear and a two-speed power shift. The eight-speed has eight forward and two reverse gears as well as a 304-mm dry disc clutch. Meanwhile, the two-speed power shift has 16 forward and four reverse gears.
This model has an independent rear PTO with 540 RPM and is equipped with a top-link draft sensing control. With its three-point hitch, it can lift objects weighing 1,832 kg. It is available in either a 4×2 two-wheel drive or a 4×4 mechanical four-wheel drive. Its hydraulics system has one or two valves and can give 36.7 litres per minute at 2100 psi.
The 6600 has inboard planetary final drives, mechanical rear differential lock, power steering, differential mechanical wet disc brakes, and a front-end loader attachment. Its standard cab was an open operator station, but during its production years, Ford offered an optional cab that came with a heater and air conditioning.
The standard front tyres of the 6600 are sized 7.50-16 while the rear tyres are 186.9-30. It is 389 cm long and 185 cm wide. Its height from ground to the hood is 173 cm but can reach 270 cm if a cab is installed. Its operating weight is 2,667 kg without a cab and 3,184 kg with one. Lastly, it has a 223-cm wheelbase, 45-cm front axle clearance, and 133- to 204-cm front tread. Its rear tread ranges from either 132 to 203 cm or 167 to 228 cm when equipped with power adjust.
The Ford 6600 is a proven tractor that still works well despite its age. Even after a few thousand hours, it is still strong and is known to be easy to operate.
