Overview & History
Part of the 200 series, the Massey Ferguson 240 tractor (MF 240) was built in Coventry, England starting from 1979, and in North America beginning 1983, before it was discontinued in 1999. This utility tractor came after the MF 230 and before the MF 250. Its last known price was US$ 18,800 back in 1998.
The MF 240 was available in two-wheel- and four-wheel-drive and featured a 2.5-litre, three-cylinder Perkins diesel engine, which can give 46 hp at 2000 rated RPM. This engine had 47.7-litre fuel capacity, liquid cooling, bore/stroke measuring at 91 by 127 millimetres, and a 9.8-litre coolant capacity. It also had a dual dry element air cleaner and an optional ether or block heater for pre-heating.
This tractor’s live PTO can do 41 hp at 540 RPM, and its drawbar can do 29 hp. It was equipped with hydrostatic power steering and two-post ROPS, with a canopy available as an option. Early models had mechanical drum brakes while the later units were fitted with differential mechanical wet disc brakes.
The MF 240’s transmission was an eight-speed sliding gear, which had eight forward and two reverse gears. With this system, the tractor must be stopped and clutch used in order to shift gears. As for its hydraulics, it had two valves and a 32.6-litre capacity and can generate 36 litres-per-minute pump flow.
This tractor came with a front-end loader attachment, and its hitch had position and draft control. The 2WD variant had tyres sized 6.00-16 at the front and 13.6-28 at the rear, a wheelbase of 193 centimetres, ground clearance of 24 centimetres, and weight amounting to 1,911 kilogrammes. It was also 316 centimetres long and 220 centimetres high.
Meanwhile, the 4WD had 10.5 or 80-18 sized tyres at the front and 14.9-24 at the rear, a 195-centimetre wheelbase, 26-centimetre ground clearance, and weighed 2,079 kilogrammes. This unit was 322 centimetres long and 218 centimetres high. Both variants were 167 centimetres wide and had a front tread of 132 to 182 centimetres and a rear tread of 132 to 193 centimetres.
The Massey Ferguson 240 is a great tractor that can still start easily even in cold weather. Despite its age, it can still pull like a horse, has great fuel efficiency, and is easy to work with. The only complaint would be the sliding gear as the act of stopping the tractor and using the clutch in order to shift gears every time can wear the operator out.
