The Case IH story

Case IH has been around for over 175 years. Its history began in 1842 when Jerome Case founded J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company. The company originally built threshers and later on expanded to steam engines, of which it became the world’s biggest manufacturer. In 1869, J.I. Case produced the first tractor powered by a steam engine. Then in 1892, a year after the founder’s death, it became the first manufacturer to build a diesel-powered tractor.

Meanwhile, the other half of Case IH was International Harvester, which formed in 1902 from the merging of McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and Deering Harvesting Company. This company went on to invent the first commercial power take-off in 1919, launch the legendary Farmall in 1923, and create the first successful spindle cotton picker in 1943, while building its own tractors.

Then in 1985, Tenneco bought selected assets of International Harvester’s agricultural division and joined its product line with that of Case, thereby creating a new identity called Case IH. One year after Tenneco bought selected assets of International Harvester’s agricultural division and merged it with Case, it then acquired Steiger, a tractor manufacturer based in North Carolina, USA.

In 1967, Tenneco–an American automotive components OEM and aftermarket ride control and emissions products manufacturer–acquired J.I. Case and continued to market the products under the Case brand. Five years later, Tenneco bought Yorkshire-based David Brown tractors, which became part of J.I. Case, which then allowed the company to enter the UK tractor market.

The first tractor under the new name Case IH was the Magnum 7100 range, which was launched in 1987. This first generation of the Magnum range set new standards for high-powered tractors all over the world.

In 1999, Case IH was then acquired by New Holland to form CNH Global group, which continued to manufacture tractors under the Case IH brand. A year later, it launched the Case STX Steiger range, which is most known for the STX500 Quadtrac model that set a new world record in 2005 for ploughing 792 acres of farmland in 24 hours.

Today, Case IH is present in more than 160 countries and is recognized for its powerful, reliable, and highly efficient tractors and agricultural equipment.
