Overview & History
Part of the MF 100 series, the Massey Ferguson 148 tractor was first launched in 1972 before it was discontinued in 1976. It featured a 2.5-litre, 3-cylinder Perkins diesel engine with power ratings of 49 hp and 130.9 lb-ft of torque at 1400 RPM. This engine has liquid cooling and its bore/stroke measures at 91 x 127 mm. It also has a compression ratio of 16.5:1 and rated RPM of 2250.
The MF148 can pull up to 1,449 kg with its rear lift. Its standard transmission has eight forward and two reverse gears and dual dry plates for its clutch. Multi-Power transmission was available as an option, with 12 forward and four reverse gears and a dry plate clutch. This tractor has a standard live rear PTO, but if it is fitted with a Multi-Power transmission, then expect the rear PTO to be independent.
Available only in a 4×2 two-wheel drive, the Massey Ferguson 148 has an open operator station for its cab. Its hydraulics system has a 28.4-litre capacity and gives a total flow of 14.8 lpm with the linkage pump and 42.8 lpm with auxiliary pump.
The MF148’s tyres are sized 6×16 or 6×19 at the front and 12.4/11×32, 12.4/11×28, or 13×6/12×28 at the rear. It weighs 1,784 kg and its wheelbase measures at 204 cm. It is 326 cm long, 162 cm wide, 144 cm high when measuring from the ground up to the steering wheel, and a ground clearance of 27 cm. Lastly, it requires one 12-volt battery to operate.
With medium engine power and higher-than-average engine capacity compared to other tractors of its time, the Massey Ferguson 148 is a well-balanced tractor for the cost-conscious. It is perfect for flat terrain and small to medium-sized properties.
