The Massey Ferguson story
Massey Ferguson’s history began in 1847, when Daniel Massey founded the Newcastle Foundry and Machine Manufactory in what is now Newcastle, Ontario in Canada. The company built some of the world’s first threshers, originally by assembling parts purchased in the US before eventually designing and making its own equipment.
Upon Massey’s death in 1856, his son, Hart Massey, became the sole owner who then changed the enterprise’s name to Massey Manufacturing Co. In 1879, the company moved to Toronto, Canada and soon became one of the city’s leading employers.
In 1891, the Massey Manufacturing Co. merged with A. Harris, Son and Company to form Massey-Harris Limited, which became the biggest agricultural manufacturer in the British Empire. The company made threshing machines, reapers, and safety bicycles.
Meanwhile in 1933, Harry Ferguson and David Brown founded the Ferguson-Brown Company, which specializes in agricultural machinery. Five years later, Ferguson made a handshake agreement with Henry Ford to produce tractors equipped with Ferguson’s self-regulating three-point hitch system, starting with the Ford-Ferguson 9N tractor. This hitch soon became popular among farmers in North America and around the world. The 9N tractor also included a rear power take-off shaft that could be used to power three-point hitch mounted implements. The location of this PTO set the standard for future tractor developments.
In 1953, Massey Harris merged with the Ferguson Company to become Massey-Harris-Ferguson, before changing to its current name five years later.
Massey Ferguson purchased the Australian manufacturers of Sunshine harvesters, H.V. McKay Pty Limited, in 1955. Hugh Victor McKay invented the combine harvester, which was the first machine to combine reaping, threshing, and winnowing grain from a standing crop. He also developed the world’s first self-propelled harvester.
The company started to struggle financially in the ‘60s due to international competition. Despite this, Massey Ferguson was able to acquire the local facilities of Rheinstahl Hanomag-Cura in Argentina in 1971. Here, the company produced its tractors and other agricultural equipment until 1999.
In 1995, Massey Ferguson’s worldwide holdings were acquired by the US-based AGCO Corporation. As one of AGCO’s several tractor brands, Massey Ferguson tractors remain to be a major seller all over the world.
Recently, Massey Ferguson introduced the new MF 1700 M Series of compact tractors, which are powered by Stage V compliant engines that can deliver up to 67hp.
