Overview & History
Before the historic merger of what became Massey Ferguson in 1953, there was just the Ferguson Company, headed by British mechanic and inventor Harry Ferguson. In 1946, he introduced the TE20, an agricultural tractor considered to be his most successful design. It was manufactured until 1948 when it was replaced by the Ferguson TEA20.
The TE20’s name was derived from “Tractor, England 20 horsepower”, as the tractor was built in England. Meanwhile, the “20” is not from the tractor’s true power output but from the formula based on engine size.
The launch of the TE20 was a culmination of Ferguson’s continuous development of “The Ferguson System” from 1916. Now known as the hydraulic three-point hitch system, it was popularised by this model, and soon became a standard for all tractors around the world to this day.
The TE20 achieved its legendary status for marking a significant advance in tractor design due to its lightweight, small size, manoeuvrability, and versatility. It also played a huge part in introducing mechanised agriculture to the masses. Because of its price point, it was the first tractor that an average farmer could afford and was compact enough to replace the draught horse and manual labour in small farms.
The Ferguson TE20 is powered by a Continental 2-litre, 4-cylinder gasoline engine. Its bore/stroke is 81 x 95 mm. It has liquid cooling, oil bath air cleaner, 5.7-litre oil capacity, and 37.9-litre fuel capacity. It runs at 1750 rated RPM, and the starter is powered at 6 volts.
Unlike modern tractors, the TE20 has one six-volt battery, a positive electrical ground, and a Lucas generator for its charging system.
It is available in 4×2 two-wheel drive and was equipped with manual steering and differential mechanical expanding shoe brake. Its cab is an open operator station with pressed steel seat. As for the transmission, the TE20 was fitted with an unsynchronised gear type, with four forward and one reverse gears.
This tractor can fit tyres sized 6.00-16 at the front and 11-28 at the rear. It weighs 1,251 kg and is 132 cm high, 161 cm wide, and 292 cm long. Its wheelbase measures at 177 cm.
Because of its great design, the iconic Ferguson TE20 is still used regularly in small farms and has become a popular collector’s item for enthusiasts.
