Overview & History
The Ford 3000 was introduced in 1965 and discontinued in 1975. Part of the company’s 1000 series, it is a new platform designed to replace the 100 series tractors built from 1955 through 1964. It has three variants: all-purpose (3100), vineyard (3300), and narrow chassis (3310).
This tractor was built in three locations–Highland Park, Michigan, USA; Basildon, England; and Antwerp, Belgium–it would have a prefix of A (Belgium), B (England), or C (US) to the serial number to indicate where it was manufactured. In its final production year, it was sold for US$ 6,300.
The 3000 has either a 2.6-litre, three-cylinder Ford gasoline or a 2.9-litre, three-cylinder Ford diesel engine. The diesel has a rated power of 38 hp at the PTO, 107- x 107-mm bore/stroke, an oil-bath air cleaner, 16.5:1 compression ratio, and 2000 rated RPM.
Meanwhile, the gasoline engine has 37 hp at the PTO, 107- x 97-mm bore/stroke, a dry air cleaner, 8:1 compression, and 2100 rated RPM. Both engines give 47 hp, are liquid-cooled, and have a fuel capacity of 49.2 litres.
Its optional transmission systems were a basic four-speed, four-speed with over/under, six-speed, eight-speed, or 10-speed. The four-speed with over/under has a lever located to the left of the shift lever. With this transmission, the tractor needs to be stopped before shifting. This option was discontinued in 1970 and replaced with the six-speed.
The eight-speed transmission has a four-speed gear selector on the left and a high-low range select lever on the right. The tractor must also be stopped before shifting. Lastly, the 10-speed transmission can be shifted between gears while the tractor is moving.
The Ford 3000 can lift up to 771 kg. It has a 4×2 two-wheel-drive chassis and a front-end loader attachment. It was fitted with an open-centre hydraulics system with a capacity of 23.8 litres and pump flow of 18.9 litres per minute.
This tractor’s standard features included manual steering, mechanical expanding shoe brakes, and an open operator station. But during its production years, buyers were offered different options such as mechanical rear differential lock, power steering, live PTO, a canvas cab, and hydraulic remote valves.
Its front tyres are sized 5.50-16 or 6.00-16, while several options were available for its rear tyres–12.4-28, 13.6-28, 14.9-24, and 16.4-24. The 3000 weighs 1,898 kg and has a wheelbase measuring at 192 cm, ground clearance at 34 cm, front tread ranging from 132 to 203 cm, and rear tread from 132 to 193 cm. It is 322 cm long, 162 cm wide, and 210 cm high from ground to exhaust.
The Ford 3000 is considered to be one of the best small tractors ever built from its era. Good parts are still available and easy to find, and the tractor is easy to repair. Farmers also remarked that the power steering makes it fun to drive.
