The Landini story
Established in 1884 in Fabbrico, Italy, Landini was founded by Giovanni Landini to manufacture agricultural equipment. In 1910, he built the first fixed “hot bulb” engine to power his tractors. However, the project was disrupted when Giovanni died. His sons took over the company instead and finished building the first prototype.
This machine, known as model 25/30, was equipped with a 30 hp “hot bulb” engine–a semi-diesel, two-stroke single-cylinder unit–and was the first authentic Italian tractor.
The model 25/30’s success allowed Landini to continue making tractors, introducing a range of 40 and 50 hp models in the mid-1930s. These became renowned under the names of Velite, Bufalo, and Super. The Super, in particular, was used for extensive land reclaiming works in Italy. They were also powered with the “hot bulb” engine.
In 1955, Landini built the L55, which was the most powerful tractor to be equipped with a “hot bulb” engine. The company continued to use this engine in their tractors until 1957.
Four years later, Landini produced its first crawler tractor, the C35. It also started using Perkins three- and four-cylinder engines with this model. In the same year, 100% of the company was purchased by Canadian tractor company Massey Ferguson.
In 1973, Landini launched the 500 series of two- and four-wheeled tractors. Seven years later, Landini started building its vineyard tractor, but only introduced it to the market in 1986.
In 1980, Landini launched a redesign of its 60, 70, and 80 series of tractors.
Landini became a part of ARGO SpA in 1989 when Massey Ferguson sold 66% of the company. When Massey Ferguson was bought by AGCO in 1994, ARGO purchased more shares of Landini, and finally acquired the final 9% of the company in 2000. As part of this purchase, Landini under ARGO continued to supply tractors to AGCO.
With its short-lived but rich Italian history and heritage, the Landini brand is highly regarded all over the world. Today, its product range includes standard, vineyard, isodiametric, and front loader tractors.
