The John Deere story
John Deere is the brand name of the US-based Deere & Company. It is known to manufacture agricultural, construction, and forestry machinery as well as other heavy equipment.
The story of Deere & Company began when its founder, John Deere, moved to Grand Detour, Illinois in 1836. As an established blacksmith, Deere served as a general repairman and manufacturer of tools (like pitchforks and shovels) in the village. Just one year after moving, Deere already set himself apart by fashioning a Scottish steel saw blade into a plow. Prior to this innovation, farmers used iron or wooden plows to which soil stuck and thus needed to be cleaned often. Deere’s creation solved this problem as the soil simply slides off the smooth steel.
A little over 30 years later, Deere & Company was incorporated in 1868 with Deere’s son, Charles, effectively running the company.
In the 1900s, Deere & Company was facing increased competition, particularly from the newly established International Harvester Company. Because of this, the company began to expand its offerings in the implement business, including gasoline tractors.
Originally, the company experimented in building their own tractor models. But ultimately, they decided to purchase the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company in 1918, which was the creator of the popular Waterloo Boy tractor.
Deere & Company continued to sell tractors under the Waterloo Boy name until it introduced the John Deere Model D in 1923. With the production run lasting from 1923 to 1953, this model had the longest run among all John Deere tractors.
A few years after introducing the Model D, the company noted that this model did not meet its customers’ needs for industrial applications. The D’s steel wheels were not suitable for hard surfaces, and the gearing was too slow for safe road speeds. To resolve these issues, the company’s engineers added solid rubber tires and fitted a 28-tooth sprocket to the final drive, giving the modified tractor a road speed of 6.4 kph. This new model was introduced to the market as the “John Deere Industrial Tractor” before it became known as the “DI”.
When the Great Depression hit in the 1930s, Deere & Company took on farmer notes and extended payment terms to support its customers. According to the Travel Channel Series Made In America, the company never repossessed any equipment during this terrible time. This strengthened its customers’ loyalty for many generations to come.
In 1960, Deere & Company introduced the world to the “New Generation of Power”, which was its first modern four-cylinder and six-cylinder tractors. Five years in the making, the redesigned product line was very different from anything the company has ever built before. They were more powerful than two-cylinder tractors and were easier and more comfortable to operate, with easy-to-locate controls, better visibility, and improved seat suspension. They were also easier to service.
As of 2018, Deere & Company is the largest agricultural machinery company in the world. Aside from building tractors and other heavy equipment, it has also been introducing new technological add-ons to make work easier for farmers.
