Overview & History
The Massey Ferguson 35 (MF35) officially entered production in 1960 and was a continuation of the FE35. But its history can be traced all the way back to 1957 when, after over 73,000 units were produced, the FE35 was rebadged as the MF35. While the previous model had a grey shell and wheels as well as a bronze finish for the body, its successor was repainted to red and grey.
Two years later, in 1959, Massey Ferguson acquired Perkins Engines, and began using the Perkins 2.5-litre, 3-cylinder diesel engine in the MF35. It gave 37 hp at a rated 2000 RPM, 3 hp more than the FE35’s engine can produce. It had liquid cooling, its bore/stroke measured at 91 x 127 mm, and its compression was at 17.4:1. Farmers saw this as a welcome improvement, as the FE35’s 23C engine was known for its poor starting performance.
The standard MF35 had unsynchronised gear transmission, with six forward and two reverse gears. Meanwhile, the De Luxe models were fitted with a dual clutch, which allowed the operator to disengage the rear wheels while keeping the power take-off and hydraulic pump engaged.
The MF35 was available in 4×2 two-wheel drive, with manual steering, differential shoe brakes, and open operator station. A swivel catch was fitted on top of the bonnet lid. The tractor also had a 12-stud shaft housing. A raised air cleaner intake went through the bonnet and must be removed before the bonnet can be lifted.
In 1962, Massey Ferguson gave the option of power-assisted variable track (PAVT) wheels to speed up alteration of the rear wheel track. They also introduced the swinging drawbar in the same year. Another revision made was the mudguards, which were changed from the shell design to the extension mudguards that connected to revised footplates. This last change was done in order to ensure health and safety compliance.
After over 200,000 units were sold, production of the MF35 ceased in 1964, when it was succeeded by the Massey Ferguson 135. Despite this, many of these units are still being used on small farms to this day.
Because of the MF35’s popularity, Massey Ferguson continued to supply kits to foreign manufacturers until 2002. Other countries licensed to build this tractor, such as TAFE in India from 1960 to 2002 and Yugoslavian firm Industry of Machinery and Tractors, which marketed it as IMT533 and IMT539. In 2015, it was relaunched by AGCO in the East African market as the “People’s tractor”.
